As a foreigner living in India, my eyes were overwhelmed with the
beauty of the country and the people. The women specifically amazed
me with their regal elegance and strength. But the longer I stayed,
the more I saw the realities of the oppression they were under. The
most significantly disturbing incident occurred when we heard our
neighbor screaming, only to come upon the sight of her husband killing
her by dousing her with kerosene and lighting her on fire. My paintings
are the story of this event and are presented in matchboxes that I
found on the roadsides of Delhi. |
